Despite being a very old technology, doorbells are still mainstream, as it is with several other home appliances. Internet of Things, smart devices, and the mobile revolution are still making their way into users houses and we have seen a plethora of devices that try to bring a smart component to that field. Ring is a company known for making a smart doorbell that bears its name, and they have just announced a new model, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro.
The new model is a little bit smaller and offers better specs when compared to the previous version. The camera now has a resolution of 1080p (Full HD), while the older model had only 720p (HD). Additionally, there’s 5GHz Wi-Fi in addition to 2.4GHz, and its look can now be customized with exchangeable faceplates. One cool trick of the Ring Pro is the ability to set specific motion zones, so the system will be automatically triggered when there’s activity in the specified area of your front door. Another key difference is that the company decided to ditch the rechargeable battery found in the original model, and the Ring Pro will have to be hooked to your doorbell chime for electricity. Both models have a built-in, two-way speaker system and the devices connect to a companion mobile app, allowing the user to interact with someone ringing the doorbell. The advantage is that it can be done from anywhere, even if the user is not at home. There’s a night mode with improved low-light visibility, and the device also offers optional cloud video recording. Additionally, since it is not a cheap doorbell, in case someone steals your Ring or Ring Pro, the company will give you a new one for free.
The news comes together with an announcement that the company just raised an additional $61.2 million in Series C funding, thus adding to the $39 million previously raised. Preorders for the Ring Pro are open on the company’s website, and it is being sold for $249 while shipping will begin around April. The device comes with 4 swappable plates in black, gray, silver and white. The original Ring is also available on their website and can be purchased for $199, in 4 different colors that cannot be changed – Satin Nickel, Polished Brass, Venetian Bronze and Antique Brass.
