Samsung is a company of many smartphones – most might agree, too many. Just when we thought that Samsung did away with so many ‘S’ series devices by eliminating the Galaxy S7 Edge Plus, rumors are now floating around about a new Galaxy S7 mini model. They were rumored to be working on a Galaxy S6 mini last year, but it never came to be. Considering Samsung has actually produced ‘minis’ in the past, it is not stretch that a Galaxy S7 mini could make an arrival, especially on the heels of the rumored Apple iPhone SE coming with a 4-inch display, an A9 processor and NFC strictly for Apple Pay. Even though iPhone followers have clearly shown they like the larger display, with sales slowing down, they may turn back the hands-of-time to pick up those users that coveted the small display of the original iPhone.
Samsung is not one to let Apple get any sort of head-start on anything, so this Galaxy S7 mini rumor may have some merit – but it is only a rumor. As long as we are talking about rumors, according to the information, the Galaxy S7 mini would sport a 4.6-inch display with only an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. However, there would be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad-core or Samsung Exynos 8890 octa-core doing the processing work – the same processors in the full-sized Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. It is also rumored to pack 3GB of RAM with a 12MP camera with 3X optical zoom – 24-70mm – however, the lens will not protrude because of the 9.9mm thickness.
Time will tell if this rumor turns out to be true and if Samsung does indeed follow the rumor that Apple is coming out with their own ‘mini,’ as there are certainly enough companies coming out with a mini in their portfolio. There can be problems with selling minis though – first, the phone is generally never a true mini as while it might have a smaller display, it does not contain the same specs of the larger device. If this Galaxy S7 mini comes to fruition, it will only have an HD display and less RAM – just because the device is smaller, does not mean it doesn’t need the full 4GB of RAM. At least this rumor does have Samsung sticking with the same processor. As many think of a ‘true mini’ as the exact same device, only smaller, this brings us to another question with minis – are they truly necessary and will a Galaxy S7 mini actually sell?
