While it is appreciated that Telus reaches out to its subscribers and lets them know what devices will get what upgrades, it would be good if they could be a little more consistent. It was only three days ago that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus were scheduled for their updates on March 16 and the LG G3 fell off the schedule altogether. Now Telus has moved the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus to March 25 and reinstated the LG G3 for a March 29 update. And Yes, it is understood that Telus puts its little disclaimer at the bottom of each post that warns “all dates are approximate and subject to change,” but one has to wonder just how much work they put into determining the dates. It might be better to post less and be more accurate, then to upset subscribers that look forward to a major software update – like Lollipop to Marshmallow.
Looking over the schedule are a few other big moves – the security updates and bug fixes for the Nexus 6, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5 were all moved from March 9 to April 4 while the Nexus 5X remained on March 9. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge moved from March 30 to April 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 remains on April 13. The Moto X Play remains set for an update on March 21 and the Moto E is added to March 22. It just goes to show that software updates are always in a state of flux and can never truly be counted on until the download reaches a customer’s device. Still, it is amazing how many months it takes from the time that Google updated their Android software until we actually see it on any older device…whenever new flagship devices are released, they generally have the newest update.
While the LG G3 was a flagship device, there are some heavy hitters on this list – Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy Note 5 – still waiting for their Marshmallow update. Motorola has done a pretty good job of updating its devices, mostly in part because they run almost pure vanilla Android and it will be interesting to see if this continues now that Lenovo will be calling the shots.
