Several smartphone case manufacturers, including Speck and Trident, have rushed in to announce their latest creations designed for the new flagship phones unveiled at Mobile World Congress. Urban Armor Gear now joins the party with a new series of composite cases for the LG G5, which happens to be one of the aforementioned flagship devices announced in Barcelona, Spain.
For the first time in the history of the LG G series, the LG G5 is wrapped in a metal case as opposed to one manufactured from polycarbonate. This could be one of the reasons why a protective case might come in handy, as it can mitigate some of (or all) the damage that might be caused to the beautiful exterior in the event of accidentally dropping the device on hard surfaces. Urban Armor Gear’s latest LG G5 composite case aims to provide maximum protection on drop and impact, all the while maintaining slim overall dimensions. It follows the company’s usual industrial design language; it has been extensively tested and meets military-grade drop-test standards (MIL STD 810G 516.6). The case features oversized tactile buttons, non-slippery ruggedized grip, scratch-resistant skid pads, and surrounds the screen to minimize damage when dropping the phone face-down. Additionally, the case features oversized ports for compatibility with a wide range of third-party accessories, cables, and headphones, and offers easy access to the smartphone’s back-fitted fingerprint reader.
Although every characteristic seems to have been designed with protection and convenience in mind, it looks like the UAG case might not be convenient enough for users who will make extensive use of LG’s expansion modules. In fact, no case manufacturer so far has unveiled a product that would offer quick access to the expansion slot without having to remove the protective shell.
In any case, UAG’s composite case for the LG G5 comes in four translucent colors, including Ice (gray), Ash (dark gray), Magma (red), and Cobalt (blue). The new case costs $34.95 and can already be purchased from the manufacturer’s website. Keep in mind, however, that the LG G5 itself has yet to be released on the market, and is expected to hit the shelves in April.
