The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are the two latest premium smartphones from Samsung Electronics. The devices just went on sale earlier this month, although pre-orders for the duo were opened last month itself. Both the smartphones launched with Android Marshmallow pre-installed, but that doesn’t mean the software in those phones do not need to be updated. Just last week, AT&T had rolled out a security update to the two handsets, and now it is apparently the turn of Verizon to do the same. That’s right, Verizon Wireless, the nation’s largest carrier, is now rolling out a new OTA update to the two smartphones that apparently fixes some Wi-Fi connectivity issues which resulted in “frequent data disconnections” and “problems while loading files or web pages”, according to Verizon.
The new software also fixes some unspecified security issues, although users expecting the March security patches for the phones will be disappointed, as reports indicate that the Android Platform Security patch version stays put at February 2016 even after the installation of the latest software. Either way, there’s no word on how large the download is, but the update available for the Galaxy S7 bumps up the phone’s software to version MMB29M.G930VVRU2APB5, while the Galaxy S7 Edge will move over to software version MMB29M.G935VVRU2APB5 after the installation of the update. It’s also important to remember that the latest update won’t be bringing any new feature to the device, seeing as it’s basically a bug-fix and security update.
As for the update itself, it shouldn’t be a very large download, because Verizon isn’t recommending a Wi-Fi only process. However, the carrier says that users need to ensure they have a stable Wi-Fi connection or a strong cellular signal before embarking on the update process. A fully-charged battery is also one of the recommendations from big red, but all of that are well along expected lines for any software update. The update went live earlier today, so it may take a while before reaching all Verizon Galaxy S7 and S7 Edges around the country. Users, however, can check for the availability of the new software manually by going into Settings > About Device > Software Update > Check for Update.
