As we’ve seen in the past few years, LG is offering quite a few different gifts for picking up the LG G5. LG is offering up a free battery and charging cradle across the board – at least in the US – while carriers are also offering something else along with it. For example, T-Mobile is also offering the new LG 360 CAM. Best Buy, however, is offering a micro USB to USB Type-C adapter along with a $100 Best Buy gift card on top of the extra battery and cradle. This will actually come in handy for many people, seeing as USB Type-C is a new standard (only a handful of smartphones use it right now) and not many people have USB Type-C cables just yet. The LG G5 does ship with a USB Type-A to Type-C cable – so it’s not like the Nexus 6P where you get a USB Type-A to Type-C and a USB Type-C to Type-C cable included.
Similar to the LG gifts offered from other retailers and carriers, you’ll have to apply for these free gifts and it’ll arrive within a few weeks. Like the old mail-in rebates that carriers use to offer on smartphones and the old flip phones (those were the days). While you can run into Best Buy today and pick up the LG G5, you won’t get your extra battery, charging cradle, $100 Best Buy Gift Card and Micro USB to USB Type-C adapter today. You also have to buy it on contract, which will cost you $99 for a two-year contract. That’s not a bad price at all considering this is a $600+ (pricing depends on your carrier) smartphone.
The LG G5 launched last Friday, and has been getting mixed reviews. Some really like the device, and some are a bit put off by the “plastic” on the metal back. LG reached out to confirm that it’s a primer coating on the back of the device, and not plastic per-say. Either way, it’s not as universally liked as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge. But that doesn’t make it a bad phone. It’s something different, and if you want a phone with a removable battery, this is basically your only choice right now.
