The LG G5 is one of the more interesting devices announced this year. The G5 is LG’s all-new flagship which was announced during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona back in February. The LG G5 is a semi-modular smartphone, and it is quite different than its predecessors. The G5 is made out of metal, and its bottom ‘chin’ is removable, and gives you access to the phone’s battery. Interesting enough, LG has also announced various modules which can be inserted instead of the one that comes with the phone, and the company calls this modules ‘LG Friends’. That being said, it was just a matter of time before iFixit gets their hands on this phone and tears it apart, and that has just happened, read on.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge were given the teardown treatment by iFixit recently, and so was the Oculus Rift VR headset. Many of you were probably waiting for the company to get their hands on the LG G5 as well, and that has just happened. That being said, iFixit gave the LG G5 an 8 out of 10 repairability score, which essentially means that the G5 is not all that difficult to repair. For comparison’s sake, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are very difficult to repair it seems, iFixit gave them only 3 out of 10 repairability score. iFixit says that it’s fairly easy to disassemble the LG G5, and that all you’ll need to crack it open is a standard screwdriver for Phillips #00 screws, as no unnecessary glue was used by the company in this area. Many of the G5’s components are modular, which is great, though the downside is the fact that module covers are glued on. Now, iFixit did list one thing that could cause issues, the G5’s fused display assembly will need to be replaced if the LCD or glass breaks, and this means you’ll have to pay extra if you break the glass on the display considering they’re fused together.
The LG G5 sports a 5.3-inch QHD display, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. The device is fueled by the Snapdragon 820 SoC, and ships with 16 and 8-megapixel rear-facing cameras (dual camera setup). The phone also packs in a 2,800mAh battery on the inside, while Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow comes out of the box here with LG’s UX 5.0 UI on top of it.
