Its disastrous foray into the smartphone sector notwithstanding, the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon, has had a pretty good time over the past year or so with its pocket-friendly devices like the $50 Fire tablet that apparently went on to become one of the best-selling items for the company during the holiday season. Taking a cue from that success, Amazon has lined up a number of new slates that will apparently be up for grabs this year, including the “Top of the Line” Kindle e-reader dubbed ‘Oasis’ that was teased by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Mr. Jeff Bezos, just last week. However, that’s not the only tablet in the pipelines from Amazon right now, if latest developments are anything to go by.
An all-new tablet from Amazon has now been listed on benchmarking site GFXBench, revealing quite a bit about the upcoming device. While there has been no information forthcoming officially from Amazon, the GFXBench listing shows that the device will likely be an entry-level product, which might be a follow-up to the Fire HD 8 if online speculation is to be believed. According to the listing, the device comes with the model number ‘KFGIWI’ and has a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels with at least 5-finger multi-touch support. As for the rest of the hardware specs as evident from the GFXBench website, the slate will be powered by MediaTek’s MT8163 SoC, which is a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at 1.3 GHz and a Mali-T720 GPU.
The device will also apparently come with just the 1.5 GB of RAM and only 8 GB of built-in storage, with no word on whether there will be a provision for capacity expansion. Meanwhile, the rear-facing camera will seemingly be just a 2-megapixel unit, and the front-facing camera meant for selfies and video chat will just have a 0.3-megapixel sensor. Goes without saying, neither camera will support 1080p videos. The upcoming device will apparently miss out on a number of important sensors as well, which is only to be expected for a device like this one which will likely be priced low enough for first-time tablet buyers to try out something new without burning a hole in their pockets.
