Mimpi Dreams is an Android platformer game that puts players in control of Mimpi, a fun-loving, mischievous dog that pees on everything to mark his territory. This game focuses on what happens in his dreams, where Mimpi takes on the persona of different heroes throughout five different game areas in order to save the day. It’s a platformer with simple controls, fun puzzle elements, a hint system and some charming graphics and sound effects. Voted one of 2016’s best games the Telegraph, there are some high expectations for Mimpi Dreams, so let’s get stuck in.
As with most games on Android, Mimpi Dreams can be downloaded from the Play Store, and while this is free to download and play, it’s only free to play through all of the levels with just one life – meaning you have to start from the beginning if you lose that one life – but unlocking the premium mode unlocks everything the game has to offer you.
There’s a cute little intro that does an okay job of introducing us to Mimpi, which also sets the scene for his vivid dreams that are at the heart of the game.
When getting started with the game, the controls – of which there are few – are introduced to get people up and moving. I think the welcome back notice is for players that previously played the first Mimpi game.
Speaking of controls, Mimpi Dreams is a nice mix of onscreen controls and touch controls. Users can either use Mimpi to move objects or drag them around by touch, but some objects do require touch in order to work.
Some of these mechanics are worked into the game to great effect, and after a little play time with the game, I was really impressed with the overall fit and finish of the game, and found myself thinking this is the sort of game that should be on my PS4, not my smartphone.
Working the “Go Premium” tag into the game levels is clever, but it can be a little annoying after a while.
The first level is the Stoneface Forest, the second level is the Tesla Landscape, and in each of the different levels the overall environment changes, and there are different puzzles to face as well as different costumes for Mimpi as well.
The only three levels – and I don’t want to ruin them for you – are called Bottle Seaside , Fairytale and Medieval Castle and needless to say they all have something fun and engaging to offer players.
These five levels are what lead people to consider the game short, and while I can’t wait to keep playing more of it, it is a pretty short game. Which is why the free mode – no matter how frustrating it is to play such a charming game with just one life – is an appreciated addition.
Playing through Mimpi Dreams I had a lot of fun, it’s the only platformer that I’ve enjoyed in a long time, and the graphics, the animations and the excellent sounds and music work brilliantly together. The detail in the animations and graphics make Mimpi Dreams a game that I feel punches well about its weight. It’s got all the right boxes ticked, and it doesn’t take any prisoners, either. It looks good, plays well, and has a lot to offer even if it can be completed in a short space of time. I fell in love Mimpi and the quirks here and there in the levels, with each small detail putting a smile on my face and looking forward to seeing more of it. It’s a short game, there’s no getting away from that, but if quality over quantity is your motto, then Mimpi Dreams is a great example of just that.

Pros
- Simple controls blending onscreen buttons and in-game touch controls are easy to get to grips with and offer some great gameplay mechanics.
- Mimpi is one hell of a silent character. Not only is it difficult to not like dogs, but with his charm and fun little walk and funny dream costumes, Mimpi is a bundle of fun.
- Great level design with fun platforming as well as some challenging puzzles throughout leads to a coherent and consistent gameplay experience, from start to finish.
- Excellent soundtrack that has some great sounds to complete the whole look and feel of the game to a high level of polish.
Cons
- Will feel too short a game for a lot of players.
- Pop-up to go premium gets annoying after a while.
Mimpi Dreams is a game that deserves to be played. It’s one of the better Android platformers out there, and despite its limitation, it can be played from start-to-finish without paying a penny. With such good level design and excellent sights and sounds, Mimpi is worth a little of your money, and the only real complaint we had was that there just wasn’t enough of Mimpi. We guess there’s always next time though, right?
