Garmin joined the wearable market roughly two years ago, and the company’s lineup generally consists of digital fitness bands and/or digital watches with GPS capabilities and activity tracking. Now Garmin is rejoining the wearable market with another product, this time, a combination between a fitness tracker and an analog watch. It’s called the Garmin Vivomove, and it’s the company’s first analog smart wearable.
Smart wearables can take various shapes and sizes, ranging from wristbands to watches, bracelets, and even “smart rings”. However, while some wearables are entirely digital, others try to combine the beauty of an analog wrist device with the smart features of a more conventional smartwatch. For its latest creation, Garmin opted for a stylish, conventional form factor sprinkled with smart features; an analog 5 ATM-rated waterproof watch equipped with an accelerometer, powered by a replaceable CR2025 coin cell battery which should hold enough energy for up to 1 year. The Garmin Vivomove comes in three variants, namely Sport, Classic, and Premium. The Sport model weighs 51 grams, the Classic variant weighs 48 grams, and the Premium model is the heaviest, tipping the scales at 67 grams. Overall, the analog smartwatch is 22 millimeters wide, 12 mm thick, and has a 42 mm diameter.
As showcased in the official presentation video below, the Garmin Vivomove accommodates two bars on the watch face: a black one which keeps track of your steps, and a red bar which acts as a “move reminder”. That’s pretty much the only visual indication of the Garmin Vivomove being a smart device, which is definitely a good thing for prospective smartwatch customers looking for a timeless, conventional and analog design. For additional smart features, the Garmin Vivomove can be synced to the Garmin Connect Mobile application, which will keep track of your fitness habits throughout the day and offer health tips. The application is available on Android, iOS, as well as Windows Phone. As far as pricing goes, the Sport Garmin Vivomove costs $149.99, whereas the Classic model is accompanied by a $199.99 price tag. The Premium model is the most expensive of the three, being priced at $299.99. The Sport model comes in black or white and can only be paired with a sports band. The Classic model is available in black or rose gold, and the Premium variant comes in stainless steel or gold-tone steel.
