Last year saw numerous news reports coming through on Jolla. More specifically, on their Sailfish OS. While the Finnish company was pushing hard to bring Sailfish OS to the market as a true operating system competitor to the likes of Android and iOS, the reports kept coming trough suggesting that the platform was having issues getting off the ground on a larger scale. Part of the reason for this was that Jolla was also looking to bring to market a number of hardware products, ones which ran on their operating system. However, that quickly came to an end when the company announced that they would not be fulfilling all pre-orders for the most recent hardware release, the Jolla Tablet.
However, in spite of the company seeming to shutter its hardware ambitions, all indications did point to the continuing development of the Sailfish operating system. In fact, back in December of 2015, the news came through that they had secured some more funding. Almost six months later and Jolla has now released another update and again confirmed another $12 million in funding has now been raised to keep Sailfish OS going.
As well as confirming the latest bout of funding, the announcement also touches on the future plans for Sailfish OS which seem to be highly dependent on licensing agreements. Along with the already confirmed licensing arrangements with the likes of Index Technologies in India, it has already been reported that the Turing Phone from TRI had moved from running Android to Sailfish OS and this is an aspect which Jolla further picks up on during the announcement, with Jolla confirming the agreed licensing of the operating system to TRI. The announcement also explains that the new funding will further help the company to close out the Jolla Tablet and more specifically, continue to refund those who had pre-ordered but had yet to receive a refund. As well as confirming that they have reached various agreements with creditors and canceled their debt restructuring application.
