Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 6 has been leaked a number of times over the past few weeks, but the latest report coming out of South Korea now seems to indicate that the phablet may not even be called the Galaxy Note 6 by the time it hits primetime. According to a report carried by South Korean news publication, ET News, Samsung is likely to market its sixth-generation Galaxy Note as the ‘Galaxy Note 7’ instead of the Galaxy Note 6, ostensibly, to eliminate any negative connotations from its sixth-generation flagships from last year, neither of which managed to set the sales charts on fire. Now that the company has tasted some success with its seventh-generation flagships (the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge), it looks like the company is unwilling to let go of the ‘6’ branding for its upcoming premium handset.
A source quoted by ET News is apparently also claiming that the next-gen Galaxy Note is already being referred to as the Galaxy Note 7 internally within the company. A high-ranking Samsung functionary reportedly also claimed that, the next iteration of the Galaxy Note phablet, if released with a version number lower than the latest flagship, “can give out a feeling that it is an outdated phone”. The company had earlier skipped a generation with its Tizen-powered Z-series low-cost smartphones that went from Z1 to Z3, without a Z2 in between.
It is important to remember that every news report on Samsung’s upcoming sixth-generation phablet has been speculative until now, so there’s no way to tell anything definitive about the nomenclature of the upcoming gadget unless Samsung makes an official announcement in this regard. However, with that unlikely to happen till the actual unveiling, Samsung fans and Android users worldwide would probably be waiting with bated breath to hear more on the issue. While here’s still no indication as to when Samsung will finally release its upcoming phablet, online speculations seem to suggest that it will come earlier than August, which is when the company had unveiled its Galaxy Note 5 last year. Now whether it launches as the Galaxy Note 6 or the Galaxy Note 7, the fact still remains that the next-gen Galaxy Note will very likely come with some stellar hardware, including an iris scanner and a 10-nanometer 6 GB LPDDR4 DRAM chip.
