When it comes to fitness trackers, you might think that there’s much of a need for an array of specifications much like there is for a smartphone. The original Fitbit after all was little more than a Bluetooth module, tiny battery and some sensors to track movement. Since then we’ve moved on and now fitness trackers – such as the Microsoft Band 2 as well as the new Fitbit Alta – pack in all manner of sensors, a display and a sophisticated processor capable of crunching figures in a blink of an eye. Samsung, back in 2014, released the Gear Fit which featured an AMOLED display, heart rate sensor and a lot of other hardware as well. Recently, the Gear Fit 2 has leaked out a number of times, and it appears as though we’re inching ever-closer to a launch of the device as near-complete specs for the wearable have now leaked out.
According to a leak obtained by SamMobile, the Gear Fit 2 is powered by a Samsung-branded CPU and runs Tizen 2.3, their own alternative to Android. Backing up that CPU is 512MB of RAM as well as 2GB of internal storage. For tracking movement such as runs and cycling, the Gear Fit 2 features GPS as well as GLONASS and is certified IP68 which makes this a tracker that can be used around water, thanks to being able to withstand submersion at around 1M for half an hour or so. To keep wearers up-to-date of their progress, there’s a 1.55-inch 432 x 216 Curved AMOLED display that, as we’ve seen in previous leaks, appears to show off a lot of information all at once.
These specs and features might not be 100% accurate, but they do help paint a picture of what the Gear Fit 2 is likely to be once it launches a little later in the year. It appears as though Samsung is competing directly with the Microsoft Band 2, which features a curved display as well as many of the same features, but this could also be a way for Samsung to offer customers a compromise between a simple fitness tracker and something like the Gear S2 smartwatch.
