Since 2009, Motorola and Verizon have made exclusive smartphones under the “DROID” brand name. Motorola has always made DROIDs, but weren’t always the only maker making them. HTC and Samsung also made a handful. However, Motorola does have exclusivity on making these devices for Verizon, and in recent years they have announced some pretty interesting devices in the DROID Turbo in 2014, and then the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID MAXX 2 in 2015. Now it looks like we are getting successors to both of those devices again this year. As Evan Blass says there is a DROID MAXX 3 and a DROID Turbo 3 set to come out this year.
Evan Blass or Evleaks, doesn’t know much else about the devices – at least that he can share. But another report indicates that the devices are going to be made of some newer materials. This is to make the devices even more rugged and durable. There’s also talk of the displays being scratch resistant. And after Motorola unveiled their shatter-proof display on the DROID Turbo 2 last year, that’s the next logical step. On top of that, they are both slated to be water-resistant. Which would complete the circle of making these devices even more durable than last year’s models. These features would definitely be some great selling points for Verizon with their DROID handsets. It’s just a shame that anyone not on Verizon in the States won’t be able to buy one.
The last few years, Verizon and Motorola have debuted their new DROIDs for the year at the end of the year. Around October or so, which means we likely still have about 5 months before these devices are actually announced. Which means the rumor mill will likely keep churning and spitting out some interesting rumors that may or may not be true. This will be the first set of DROIDs to come out from the new Motorola or Moto as they are called now. And it’s going to be real interesting to see how these smartphones look, what kind of specs we get and even the pricing on these devices. Given that the company is wholly owned by Lenovo.
