Let’s face it, we all spend a whole lot of time on YouTube watching all sorts of videos each day, probably more than we should. There’s tons of great content on YouTube, so it’s understandable. But have you ever started watching a video, then left the app or tab, to reply to a message, or check your email, or answer the phone, or something else? Coming back to that video and starting where you left off can be a guessing game, especially where YouTube sometimes remembers where you stopped watching and sometimes it doesn’t. YouTube is looking to fix that, and make it easier to continue watching videos.
It appears that YouTube is testing out a progress bar that appears at the bottom of a video. This is located on pages that aren’t video pages (like search results, channel pages, home page, etc). This way you can see where you left off before you go back into the video. YouTube is supposedly going to start exactly where you left off (give or take a few seconds), so you don’t have to watch the entire video over again. According to reports, this testing is a server-side change, as some are seeing it and some aren’t. There’s also no new version of YouTube for Android currently. We aren’t seeing it on any of our devices here, so it could be a pretty small test right now.
Many of you might be wondering why YouTube is testing this, seeing as YouTube already automatically jumps back to where you left off. Which is true, it does. Well sometimes it does, other times it may not remember where you left off. This change is supposed to be more visual. So you can see how far you got in the video when you watched it before. Not really a huge deal, but definitely a nice feature to add into YouTube. We should see it rolling out more widely in the next few days or weeks, depending on how the testing is going for the YouTube team. There’s been quite a few changes coming to the YouTube app recently. More than likely the team is getting ready for Google I/O next week.
