One of the most exciting things about a new version of Android launching, is wondering what Google is going to name it. Since Android 1.5, Google has named the versions of Android after desserts in alphabetical order. We started with Cupcake, then moved onto Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop and Marshmallow. Of course, after Android M, we have Android N. While Google did allow us to send in names for Android N, we still don’t know what it’ll be called. However we may know fairly soon.
Today, the Android team posted a video across their social media channels, which was titled “Android N: Naming Tip #4”, and it’s a pretty short video telling us what a name could be – not necessarily in regards to Android N. However, on their Facebook, Google+ and Twitter posts they mention, “Thanks for your submissions. We’ll reveal the new name in a few weeks!” So we shouldn’t be too far out from knowing what the official name of Android N is.
Typically when Google announces the new name for Android, they do so at the Googleplex with the unveiling of a new Android statue. It’s been customary that Google creates a new statue for each version of Android. Last year for Marshmallow, Google unveiled a statue of an Android robot holding a gigantic Marshmallow. Rather plain, but still symbolic of what Android 6.0 is named after. When the name for Android N is actually unveiled in a few weeks, we likely won’t be getting the stable version of Android N. That typically comes out a few weeks after (in some cases the day) they announce new Nexus hardware. Which is indeed coming up real soon.
Google has already unleashed three developer previews for Android N. Google is slated to push out two more previews before the final build is available sometime in Q3. Now the third quarter does begin on July 1st. So we could see Android N launch anytime between then and September 30th. A rather big time-frame, but that is customary for software launches these days. It’s also to keep Android fans guessing.
