For some time now, we’ve been seeing leaked images of an upcoming smartphone from AT&T and Samsung, and now it’s finally officially official. In a press release this morning, AT&T has gone ahead and announced the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active, following in the footsteps of last year’s Galaxy S6 Active, and other “Active” Galaxy S devices over the years. More rugged and able to withstand more punishment, this year’s Active variant of Samsung’s flagship does a little more than it has in previous years and AT&T is more than happy to hammer home the point that this will be available “exclusively” from AT&T.
Just as with previous Galaxy S Active devices, the Galaxy S7 Active shares most of its internals with the Galaxy S7, however it does have one difference. On the inside the Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM are the same, as is the 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, but this packs in a 4,000 mAh battery. This compares to the original Galaxy S7’s 3,000 mAh battery, which means that the Active should get better battery life overall. This model features 32GB of internal storage, expandable up to 200GB via the microSD card slot and is available in Camo Green, Sandy Gold and Titanium Gray. So, what makes this new device “Active”? Well, that would be not only the IP68 rating making it water and dust resistant, but also the Military Grade Body (MIL STD-810G) which makes this one sturdy smartphone able to withstand drops and falls much better than your average smartphone.
On AT&T, the Galaxy S7 Active will be available starting June 10th for $26.50 a month on a 30 installment plan on AT&T Next or $33.13 each month in 24 installments for those on an AT&T Next Every Year plan. There’s a limited time offer running on the new Galaxy S7 Active as well, which nets new customers on a 24-month contract a free Gear S2 with NumberSync. For all intents and purposes, this is a Galaxy S7 with body armor and a larger battery, but for those that want some of the best specs in a smartphone without the need to baby it all the time, the Galaxy S7 Active is a solid choice.
