Google Shows Off Daydream VR Experiments In New Videos

This year’s Google I/O was filled with interesting tech, as always. Google talked about tons of stuff at this year’s Developer Conference, including Android N, company’s new apps, machine learning, Android Studio update… and plenty more stuff including the company’s upcoming Daydream platform. So, what is Daydream? Well, it’s Google’s upcoming Virtual Reality (VR) platform basically. The company has laid out plans for Daydream, including guidelines for companies so that they can start making Daydream-compatible smartphones.

That being said, Google has just released a couple of new Daydream-related videos on the company’s Google VR YouTube channel. The company has posted two new videos, and they’re here to highlight capabilities of the upcoming Daydream platform. The first video shows off ‘Animator’, an experimental app which comes from Daydream Labs. This app allows people to actually physically grab a toy within VR, and basically carry it around in order to get the real sense of space. The second video the company has posted shows off Daydream Labs’ ‘Puppeteer’ app. This app, unlike ‘Animator’, lets developers animate the joints of a character, in this case joints of a skeleton.

Now, Daydream is not exactly Google’s first trip to the VR space, many of you remember Google Cardboard, which is still around. Google Daydream is something completely different though, it’s supposed to push Google’s VR efforts to a completely new level. Virtual Reality still has a long way to go in order to become what we’ve seen in some movies (for example), and considering how much time and money certain companies invest in it, chances are we’ll get there sooner than we’ve hoped. Many of you have heard of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and if you’ve tried out either of those VR headsets, you’re probably very well aware where VR is headed, no matter whether you like it or not. Now, if you’d like to check out Google’s new Daydream videos, you can do so, both of them are embedded below this article. As it usually goes, we’ll make sure to let you know as soon as Google releases more information regarding Daydream, so stay tuned for that.
