Huawei Responds To Nexus Claims

Towards the end of last week saw some interesting news came through regarding Nexus. For those that missed it, the South African arm of Huawei seemed to be confirming that Huawei is making the next Nexus device. Which in spite of Huawei being the makers of the current Nexus flagship smartphone, the Nexus 6P, this news did come as a surprise to many, as reports had previously (and routinely) been coming through suggesting that this year’s Nexus smartphone would come by way of HTC. In fact, the reports not only suggested that HTC will be making the next Nexus smartphone, but seemed to be confirming that HTC would be making two Nexus smartphones this year. Of course, with the HTC reports being rumors, none of the information was considered to be in any way official. In contrast, as the Huawei news seemed to be originating from Huawei, it certainly did add more authenticity to the information coming through.

However, it now looks as though Huawei has reached out to Droid Life with a comment on the situation. First up, the statement does not deny that Huawei is making the next Nexus smartphone but it also does not confirm it either. In fact, Huawei make the point that “We don’t comment on future products, as a matter of policy.” With the statement going on to state that “Huawei is committed to creating the world’s most compelling and innovative devices, offering an exceptional performance and outstanding user experience.” While this does not provide any firm information on the next Nexus device(s), the same statement does highlight the relationship between Google and Huawei with the rest of the statement reading as “We are proud to have worked with Google, which is strong in innovation, on the Nexus 6P and will continue to collaborate in the future, such as our support for Daydream, the recently-announced platform for high performance mobile VR.”

So again, it seems that there is no firm confirmation or denial coming from Huawei on whether they will be making one of the next Nexus smartphones. With all the Daydream VR talk, it does stand to reason that a phone from Huawei will be coming out towards the end of the year which supports the platform and around the time when it is expected to launch. However, whether that phone comes in the form of a Nexus smartphone or something else, remains the be seen. Not too long ago, reports of a refreshed Nexus 6P were being rumored thanks to a benchmark listing that popped up on GeekBench which seemed to be confirming a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor-powered Nexus 6P. So it could be the case that there is a HTC Nexus coming (or two) and a refreshed Nexus 6P. Although, that is currently just one of the Nexus scenarios that could play out.
