Last year, Google has, for the first time ever, introduced two Nexus smartphones in a single year. The company has partnered up with LG and Huawei in order to release the Nexus 5X mid-range smartphone, and the premium Huawei Nexus 6P phablet. These two devices have been available for purchase for a long time now, for well over 6 months, and we’re already looking forward to the next-gen Nexus smartphones. Various rumors started surfacing a while back, and it seems like HTC is the company behind this year’s Nexus devices, though nothing has been confirmed just yet.
Back in April, a rumor surfaced saying that the new Nexus devices will be called ‘Marlin’ and ‘Sailfish’, and that HTC is manufacturing both of those devices. The two devices are allegedly referred to as the ‘M1’ and ‘S1’ internally, in case you were wondering. That being said, a new piece of info just surfaced, and it seems like the ‘Marlin’ handset has been spotted in Chromium issue tracker. If you take a look at the image down below, you’ll get to see ‘Marlin’ listed there. That is not all though, a rumor came in along with this listing, and it says that the all-new HTC Nexus smartphone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 821 processor, while it will ship with the newest version of Android, Android N, of course. You have probably noticed that the ‘Angler’ and ‘Bullhead’ codenames are also listed in Chromium, and those are the names of the already released Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P devices.
That is, unfortunately, all the info we have at the moment. The ‘Marlin’ listing definitely does not prove that HTC is the manufacturer of the upcoming Nexus device, it might as well be Huawei again, but if rumors are to believed, HTC will manufacture it. This listing does prove that the device is on its way though, so which is good enough for now. We do expect Google to release more than one Nexus smartphones once again this year, which means that we might see a smaller and a bigger Nexus again, and rumors did mention HTC might manufacture two Nexus phones in 2016, so… is it possible that this Taiwan-based company is behind both Nexus phones? Well, we’ll have to wait and see.
