Samsung may be the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, but the company has a vast product portfolio that ranges from televisions to refrigerators, washing machines to laptop computers and more. Over the past few years, enthused by the success of its smartphone business, the company has begun investing in the smart wearables sector, and its ‘Gear’ range of smartwatches have already been getting a lot attention from consumers and the media alike. Samsung’s latest smartwatch line, the Gear S2, was launched last year, so it is no surprise then that an online report is now claiming that the company has been working on its upcoming smartwatch, codenamed ‘Solis’, which is Spanish for ‘sun’.
The report reveals a number of other details regarding the upcoming device, some of which are to be expected. According to the report, Solis will run on Tizen, which is an open source operating system based on the Linux kernel. It is worth mentioning here that all but one of Samsung’s previous smartwatches have been launched with Tizen, with the sole exception being the Gear Live, which was released back in 2014 and happens to be the only Samsung smartwatch until now to have come with Android Wear as its operating system of choice. Meanwhile, the latest report goes on to further claim that the upcoming device will come in a number of different variants carrying model numbers SM-R760, SM-R765, SM-R770, SM-R765V and SM-R765S, with the last two said to be carrier-specific variants.
Sadly, though, for smartwatch enthusiasts, the report does not shed any light on the hardware specs or software features of the Solis, but the upcoming gadget is expected to carry on with the circular display that was seen on a Samsung smartwatch for the first time only last year (on the Gear S2). As for the latest report, it remains to be seen how accurate it turns out to be, but either way, it would be interesting to see how long it takes for Samsung to make its upcoming smartwatch official. The company, of course, has a lot on its hands at the moment, what with its upcoming sixth-generation Galaxy Note (rumored to be marketed as the Galaxy Note 7) phablet expected to be unveiled in early August.
