Huawei may not be the most well-known tech brand in North America, but the Chinese multinational telecom equipment and consumer electronics giant has gone from strength to strength in the past few years. While its telecom equipment business has grown significantly during this time, it is Huawei’s consumer electronics business, especially its growing clout in the global smartphone market that has been the matter of many reports around the world in recent times. While the Huawei brand itself has done wonders for the company, it is the ‘Honor’ brand that has truly catapulted the company into the top spot in its home country, helping it go past celebrated competitors like Xiaomi on the one hand and established consumer tech giants like Lenovo on the other.
While the Honor-branded devices manage to pull in the volumes for Huawei, the P-series smartphones continue to remain its premium flagship line. The company this year launched the Huawei P9 range in London with a dual rear-camera setup that’s said to have been developed in association with iconic German optics brand – Leica. Although initially there was some controversy surrounding the claim of Leica’s involvement in the development process of the camera module, the two companies later released a joint statement strongly disputing all rumors about Leica’s involvement being merely a branding exercise. Either way, with the launch of the Huawei P9 and its variants now out of the way, the Chinese tech giant is currently believed to be working on its next-generation P-series smartphone – the Huawei P10.
As is customary these days, reports about upcoming smartphones start trickling in months in advance. That being the case, murmurs about the Huawei P10 have already started reaching the online tech media. According to very early reports coming out of China, the next-gen P-series smartphone from Huawei may well come with the fingerprint scanner integrated on the physical home button in the front of the device as opposed to the rear-facing fingerprint scanner found on the P9 and its derivatives. While these extremely early rumors need to be taken with a pinch of salt, it still bears mentioning that early rumors about a dual rear-camera setup on the Huawei P9 last year did turn out to be right on the money.
