Samsung’s Gear Fit2, the follow-up to the original Gear Fit wearable tracker and fitness band, was just officially announced earlier this afternoon alongside the Gear IconX wireless earbuds, coming with an all-new design and some new and improved features over the older model. While it’s likely that those looking for a wearable dedicated to fitness and don’t yet have anything to track their activities may be looking to pick up the new Gear Fit2, there are those who are surely wondering how it stacks up against the original, and Samsung has provided a nifty infographic which lays out the comparison between the new and the old so consumers have a better understanding of what they’ll be getting should they choose to go with the new fitness band.
Both the Gear Fit and the all-new Gear Fit2 come with a Curved Super AMOLED display, albeit the Gear Fit2 comes in a bit smaller at 1.5-inches compared to the 1.84-inches of the Gear Fit. Having said that, the Gear Fit2 also sports a higher resolution display of 216 x 432 compared to the 128 x 432 on the Gear Fit, so while the display is slightly smaller, it’s likely unnoticeable to most people and the resolution is a bit better. The weight between the two is roughly the same, as the Gear Fit weighs about 27g while the Gear Fit2 only weighs 28g. The battery is fairly similar as well, having moved from a 210mAh battery in the original Gear Fit, down to a 200mAh battery in the all-new Gear Fit2.
Where things start to differ a little is with the RAM and storage. The original Samsung Gear Fit only had 8MB of RAM and 16MB of storage, but for the Gear Fit2 Samsung has bumped things up to 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage, which should make sense given that it has a standalone music player and will have more functionality to make use of the higher RAM and internal space limits. The original Gear Fit was also only compatible with Samsung Galaxy devices, while the Gear Fit2 is compatible with most Android devices running on Android 4.4 and above, so long as they have at least 1.5GB of RAM. It also runs on the latest Tizen software, while the Gear Fit ran on a completely different OS called RTOS. With the Samsung Gear Fit2, GPS and a barometer were added to the likes of the heart rate monitor, gyro, and accelerometer, and it also comes in both large and small sizes as well as two extra colors, while the Gear Fit only came in one size and was only available in Black. The water and dust resistant rating was also bumped up from IP67 to IP68. The original Gear Fit, if you can find it, should be available for around $70, while the Gear Fit2 which is scheduled to go up for pre-order tomorrow and launch officially on June 10th, is slated for a price tag of $179.
