Cussing GPS is an Android app that, as you might have guessed from its name, is designed to make getting directions from A-to-B a little more fun and interesting by throwing in some curse words as you make your way from point-to-point. The app will still get from A-to-B just as you’d want to thanks to its reliance on Google Maps, so you won’t need to worry about this being some sort of prank app, it really does do what you need it to do. It also uses Google’s built-in Text-to-Speech feature which has a couple of advantages, one of which is that passengers will be surprised to hear it say things like curse words and the other is that users can input their own words into it, too. So, let’s take it for a spin and see what it’s like, shall we?
First thing’s first, users will need to download Cussing GPS from the Play Store, after that, they will need to give the app access to their location, as it of course uses GPS.
There’s a general overview of the map near where you are, and as you can see it does use Google Maps, which means that you’ll get the same sort of directions as you would with Google Maps or most other apps.
From here, users will need to input an address or GPS coordinates in order to get directions to where they want to go.
Users can also choose miles or kilometers, which is a nice touch as it covers the two most widely used measurements for distance, helping out our European friends in the process.
Once you get started with a trip, you’ll be given the usual voice prompts from Google’s voice system, but there are profanities thrown in at the end or in between statements.
This list of profanities can be edited by users to their heart’s content, and as we can see there’s already quite a lot of choices in the pre-determined list included. Some of which are quite colorful.
Adding your own words to things is nice and easy, and users can input whatever they want, which is actually pretty great. After all, families and groups of friends often create their own curse words that become jokes in their own right. Imagine the surprise when the GPS starts crying out their in-joke curse words?
As far as actually getting from place-to-place goes, Cussing GPS does as good a job as Google Maps does, because they both use the same engine in effect. This is a good thing of course as this means that people looking to actually get somewhere on time will be able to without getting lost or whatever, this is not just a fun app, it’s something that will actually get you where you need to go. Of course, the main attraction is that this is an app that will allow users to enjoy a car ride with a little more fun in it. That fun comes in the swear words that will be read aloud by the phone alongside the boring directions. This is good fun and while the Google voice doesn’t quite do the real vicious curse words justice, this is part of the fun, as it is surprising for a passenger to hear Google Maps read out a curse word quite casually.
Ratings
- Speed (4/5) – Everything here in Cussing GPS runs quickly and it finds addresses nice and smoothly, too.
- Theme (4/5) – It looks like an Android app and while it’s not the prettiest out there, it gets the job done and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.
- Features (3/5) – Ultimately, Cussing GPS has one selling point; to swear as you drive. If that’s not all that funny to you, then this is the sort of app that you might not like, but it can be good fun and is fairly easy to use.
- Overall (4/5) – Cussing GPS is good, tongue-in-cheek fun and it still manages to get the job done properly when it comes to making sure you get to where you need to be, too.
Pros
- Hooks into Google Maps to make sure that it still gives accurate directions ad turn-by-turn audio cues.
- Allows users to add, remove or completely change the list of curse words that Cussing GPS will blurt out on your way to where you’re going.
- Surprises people in the car as the Google app just casually seems to come out with these curse words as a matter of fact.
- Tongue-in-cheek fun that should appeal to the majority of users that are looking for something a little different to try out with their friends.
Cons
- Could be considered a little too expensive for what it does.
- Google voice doesn’t quite get the point across with some of the more visceral curse words that it has on offer.
All-in-all, Cussing GPS is the sort of thing that might not appeal to everyone, but will certainly have its following out there. It’s good fun and even though I wouldn’t recommend it to families, it will be great fun for groups of friends that are travelling together. It gives users a way of creating their own curse word list as well, which is great for groups of friends that have own in-jokes and classic curse words.
