Samsung held a mostly surprise event yesterday to announce their two newest wearables, the Gear Fit2 and the Gear IconX, and while the event wasn’t technically a surprise since they did send out invites, those invites were sent out no more than a couple of days in advance, when usually events are announce weeks ahead of time. That is neither here nor there, though, and what’s important are the two new wearable devices. The Gear Fit2 is Samsung’s follow up to the original Gear Fit, and while the design remains mostly the same, it has been tweaked just a little bit and improved in certain areas.
The Curved AMOLED display is now a tiny bit smaller, going from 1.84-inches down to 1.5-inches, which is likely to be barely noticeable, but it also comes with a higher resolution than the screen on the original Gear Fit. It’s also IP68 certified for dust and water resistance, and it now has 512MB of RAM along with 4GB of internal storage, allowing it to be used as a standalone music player. Other new features include the built-in GPS, and the barometer, both of which weren’t available features of the older model. Pre-orders on the device have started from today and are set at $179, and the device is scheduled to launch on June 10th, and is available in black, pink, and blue.
For some, the standout product from yesterday’s event will be the Gear IconX, Samsung’s new truly wireless earbuds that are also integrated with fitness tracker features allowing it to count your steps, your calories burned and more. Each earbud holds 4GB of storage, and while they do use a Bluetooth connection for syncing up to your device, they also link to each other with their own Bluetooth connection to keep the audio in sync. They can be used as a standalone music player or they can connect to the device for streaming music from your smartphone, and they come with nifty charging/carrying case that you’ll absolutely need to keep on you if you plan to use for them streaming music and will want them for more than an hour and a half. The Gear IconX also comes in a few different colors which include white, black, and blue, and they will retail for $199 with a launch sometime later this year in Q3. With both devices aimed at those who want to be active, it begs the question of whether or not Samsung’s Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX will be worth buying over devices like a Fitbit or the Bragi Dash – another pair of truly wireless earbuds with fitness tracking features.
