Xiaomi To Launch A VR Headset In August, Confirms Exec

Xiaomi is the largest smartphone manufacturer in China, and one of the fastest growing smartphone OEMs in the world. This company is not only manufacturing smartphones though, they’re in the business of manufacturing all sorts of smart gadgets, from smart scales and smart light bulbs, to tablets and fitness bands. Now, the company also tends to release some out-of-the-box products from time to time, like the electric bicycle they’ve introduced recently. That being said, it seems like the company is working on a VR headset as well, read on.

According to Xiaomi’s General Manager, Tang Mu, Xiaomi is very much working on a Virtual Reality (VR) headset. Now, the company’s upcoming VR headset will be compatible with Google’s Daydream platform which was announced during the Google I/O last month. It seems like the company decided to make their very own VR headset because none of the existing ones are optimized for MIUI, and the company’s GM also said that this is the best way to provide the best VR experience to MIUI users. This VR headset is expected to land in August, though we still don’t know when exactly, nor how much will it cost in the end, but you can expect it to be quite affordable, this is Xiaomi we’re talking about after all. We do expect leaks to start popping up soon though, so we might get a glimpse of the device before Xiaomi actually announces it.

Once Xiaomi introduces this VR headset, they will join the likes of Huawei, HTC, Lenovo and Samsung, a number of smartphone manufacturers which have already released dedicated VR headsets for their smartphones. Now, it’s not exactly a secret that tons of people all around the world are using Xiaomi’s products, even though the company officially doesn’t sell their devices in that many regions. Either way, releasing a dedicated VR headset seems like a good idea for the company, especially considering MIUI is so different than other Android-based UIs, so it would be best if they adapt their VR headset to work (best) with the company’s platform. As soon as more info surfaces, we’ll make sure to let you know, as we always do, so stay tuned.
