Gear S2 Gets Photo Watch Faces, Sleep Tracking and More

Smartwatches may have gotten off to a slow start, but they seem to be gaining popularity in recent months. And with so many options to choose from and a plethora of customization options, everyone can find one that suits their needs and style. While smartwatches may not yet have reached their full potential, the Samsung Gear S2 stands out as one of the most feature-packed wearables on the market. The Gear S2 does most of the same things you’ll find on competing smartwatches. But it also does things many of them don’t, for example, it allows  the user to place calls directly on (and speak into) the watch, and will store up to 300 songs for playback without the need for the accompanying smartphone. And with its next update, it will bring even more to the table.

Samsung’s latest operating system update for the Gear S2 is 61.1 MB in size. The firmware version is R732XXU2DPFB, or R732XXU2DPFB if you have a Gear S2 Sport. Among the new features is the ability to set a photo as the background for your watch face. It will also make recommendations for watch faces, and users can install them directly from the watch without the need to use a smartphone. An automatic sleep monitor will be added to the Gear S2 to help you track your sleeping patterns, as well as a social networking sharing feature. An upgrade to S-Voice will also expand the watch’s voice command capabilities to include starting a timer and using messaging apps. Lastly, they’ve also added a new contacts app, with an accompanying widget.

Samsung has already begun pushing the software update to Gear S2 owners, so if you have a Gear S2 be on the lookout for it to arrive on your device soon. To perform the update, simply follow the steps in the Samsung Gear app on your smartphone once prompted. If you’d like to check for the update manually go into the app and find Settings, then About Gear, and finally Update Gear software. The process may take some time, so be prepared to be without your watch while the update completes.
