Meizu's Upcoming Smartwatch Caught In Leaked Image

Even though the smartwatch segment is seeing a positive growth, it hasn’t seen any mass adoption among users and largely remained a niche product. As of now, only a handful of smartphone manufacturers are making their own smartwatches. While Android Wear has been a popular platform for smartwatches, many Chinese manufacturers have opted to use their own customized version of Android on their smartwatches. Now it looks as if Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu is looking to join the smartwatch party. In fact, photos of this alleged smartwatch have started surfacing on Chinese social media sites.

A leaked image of Meizu’s purported smartwatch gives a first look at how Meizu’s upcoming smartwatch will look like. As you can see in the image below – attached below the post – the smartwatch sports a circular design and looks a lot like Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch. The leak also shed some light on features of this alleged smartwatch; the smartwatch will come with leather straps, customizable wallpapers – also called watch faces – and sports three physical buttons on right side of the watch. As for hardware details, if you believe the rumors, the smartwatch will be powered by a Rockchip RK6321 Dual-core processor with low powered Cortex-A5 cores, which makes sense since smartwatches don’t need the kind of power that a smartphone would require. Since the smartwatch will be running on a Rockchip SoC, it’s less likely that this Meizu smartwatch will come with Android Wear OS – additionally, Meizu’s biggest market is China, where Google is currently banned, making Android Wear all but useless.

Apart from this smartwatch, Meizu is also planning to launch a budget-friendy smartphone called Meizu Metal 2. In terms of specifications, Meizu Metal 2 will sport a 1920×1080 Full-HD display, at the heart of the device is MediaTek’s Helio P10 SoC. On the memory side, the device will come with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage, and likely to run on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS. As for availability and launch date, according to reports, Meizu’s Metal 2 smartphone and rumored smartwatch could launch on August 10th in China. Sadly there are no other details available as of now whether Meizu has any plans to launch this smartwatch outside of China or not, so for more details, we can only wait until Meizu make this smartwatch official.
