Xiaomi’s smartphones and tablets, as many of you know, come with the company’s Android-based MIUI OS pre-installed. MIUI 8 is the latest version of the company’s OS, and even though it hasn’t rolled out to the company’s devices yet (aside from those that ship with it), it will soon. The stable version of MIUI 8 will start rolling out next month, and the beta is available as we speak. Having that in mind, it’s also worth mentioning that the company has already teased MIUI 9, it seems like they’re planning to start with its development soon, and are currently in the process of gathering data and ideas.
The company’s all-new MIUI 8 OS is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and it seems like future MIUI ROM versions will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat, Google’s all-new version of Android. These are actually great news because Xiaomi isn’t all that great at updating their devices to new versions of Android, their devices were stuck on KitKat for a long time, despite the fact Lollipop was around for quite some time back then, and even Marshmallow was around. Anyhow, Xiaomi has confirmed that they’ve received Android 7.0 Nougat’s source code, and are planning on developing a new MIUI version for it soon. So, chances are that the MIUI 9 update will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat, which is always nice to hear.
The company did say that they’ll start developing MIUI 9 soon, but we still don’t know when to expect that version of the OS to launch. We presume it will take Xiaomi quite a bit of time to develop Android 7.0-based MIUI version, so don’t expect this update to arrive in the next couple of months. Xiaomi can surprise us, of course, they’ve picked up the pace lately in order to deliver Android 6.0-based update to their devices, so let’s hope they’ll continue doing so. We also don’t know what features to expect in MIUI 9, but it’s still too early to talk about that, MIUI 8 is a current version of the OS and quite a significant one at that.
