Nokia was once known as the number one cellphone manufacturer back in the day. Some of the company’s old devices are still widely known even today, including the famed Nokia 3310, known for its excellent build quality back then. However, Nokia wasn’t able to adapt to the smartphone industry in time and has since lagged behind in the industry after suffering serious financial losses which caused the firm to sell its Devices and Services businesses to Microsoft. Nokia has since then been trying to make a comeback with the release of its first Android powered device, the Nokia N1 Tablet. The tablet was released a couple of years back and enjoyed quite a bit of success even though it was released in limited markets.
Reports from the Finnish company have now said that it plans to release two high-end Android powered devices by the end of the year. The devices will be running on Android 7.0 Nougat with the Nokia Z Launcher UI on top of it. As for hardware specs, one of the devices will have a 5.2-inch display while the other will sport a 5.5-inch display. Both displays will be AMOLED displays with a Quad HD resolution. The two new smartphones will be powered by the Snapdragon 820 system-on-chip clocked at 2.1 GHz backed by the Adreno 530 GPU to handle graphics. It is also stated that both devices will carry the IP68 ratings, which means the devices will be water and dust resistant. It is a feature which is becoming more common in the latest flagships and will be much appreciated by users with an active lifestyle. A fingerprint scanner might also be included on both products for added security. As for optics, there is nothing known yet but a premium camera setup can be expected from the company.
As for availability and pricing, it has been reported that the devices will be made available in China first and will likely cause around 3,000 Yuan ($448). The two devices could launch in late 2016 or early next year, but nothing has been confirmed. Rumors and leaks of the Nokia smartphones running on Android are bound to surface in the coming weeks so be on the lookout. Both devices are also reported to be in the prototype phase so the specs reported here might differ from the final product when launched.
