Samsung hit the fitness tracker market with a splash back when they introduced the first-generation Gear Fit wearable, and its refined sequel, the Gear Fit 2, keeps the magic going. Though carriers in the US have largely shied away from selling fitness trackers among their stocks of phone cases and LTE-enabled smartwatches, Verizon has been a big exception from the beginning, with a more than healthy stock of fitness wearables now on sale to customers. Samsung’s Gear Fit 2 has officially joined those ranks as of Thursday, available now for Big Red customers and non-customers alike, with options to buy the smart fitness tracker online and in store.
To recap, the Gear Fit 2 features Samsung’s own open-source OS, Tizen, which lets it hook up to Android devices running Android 4.4 KitKat and higher. The tracker has an AMOLED display on the front that measures 1.5 inches and shows users a wide variety of data like steps taken and heart rate. The comfortable and futuristic wearable runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor backed by 512MB of RAM, with 4GB of storage for users’ files and music. The wearable features Gorilla Glass 3 for durability, along with GPS, an accelerometer, a gyrometer and a barometer. Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi connectivity are on board, as well. Rounding out the wearable’s feature set, users will find a dedicated heart rate monitor, magnetic charging pins, and a 200 mAh battery that should keep the fitness band going for a full day under reasonable use.
The comfortable, multi-talented, and highly customizable fitness tracker is available from Verizon for $179.99, and is already on official sale and ready to ship or be picked up in store. The fitness wearable is available with a choice of a large or small band, but there is no choice available when it comes to color; customers will only be able to score the Gear Fit 2 in its default and stoic dark gray.
