Samsung has been a long time supporter and sponsor of the Olympics and at every event from 1998, has provided competitors with Samsung phones. As the 2016 the Olympic Flame reaches Rio, Brazil it’s no surprise that Samsung are providing a large number of devices for competitors. However, for 2016 Samsung is pulling a little something extra out of the sponsorship bag: namely Special Olympic Games Limited Editions, which will go on sale in a limited quantity throughout a limited number of regions. Today, Samsung has released an unboxing video showing the Olympic Games Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge device. This model is on sale today with 2,016 devices available for each of the following countries: Brazil, the United States of America, China, Germany and Korea, but has made a total of 12,500 Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition smartphones and Gear IconX smartwatches available to competing athletes in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee.
Although the core hardware of the Galaxy S7 Edge is identical between the Olympics Edition and the ordinary model, Samsung have mixed up the external look and internal software of the Galaxy S7. Samsung have incorporated a colorway pattern in red, green, blue, yellow and black (these of course being the colors of the Olympic Rings). There’s a blue ring on the main rear camera, sensors and flash unit. The power and lock button is finished in red, the volume rocker key is in green whereas the speaker and home button are in yellow. The overall shell of the device is finished in black. This customisation continues to the user interface, where Samsung have included a custom designed and themed interface, which is very much related to the Olympic Games. Here these same five Olympic Games colours are used throughout the device in key areas such as the home, lock screens, Samsung message, dialer and contact screens, and the notification bar. There are a number of Olympic Games motifs inspired by the 2016 Rio games that may be used as wallpapers and as a special bonus, Samsung have included a newly developed 3D Flag application. Here, customers can select their nation of choice and display this on the Galaxy S7 Edge’s 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display.
Finally, Samsung have mixed up the packaging for the 2016 Olympic Edition Galaxy S7 edge. Samsung are including a re-usable pouch designed to reduce the amount of waste packaging for a new smartphone device. The pouch is a souvenir of the Rio 2016 games and can be used to carry a number of different objects. We’ll see if Samsung decide to include this sort of packaging on devices going forwards.
