Coolpad is well known in China for their budget-oriented phones, being one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the country. And as with other Chinese smartphone manufacturers, Coolpad is also trying to capitulate the growing Indian smartphone market, targeting the low-cost segment and providing value for money devices. Coolpad is directly competing with Xiaomi in this area after LeEco became the largest shareholder of the company in June. During an event in New Delhi, Coolpad has unveiled another entry level smartphone with the moniker Coolpad Mega. The invite to the event described the phone as ‘Mega Selfie’ phone, and as the tag goes, it is selfie-centric.
The new device from Coolpad features a 5.5-inch HD display and 2.5D glass, with a resolution of 1280 x 720, and a pixel density of 267 PPI. The phone is powered by a quad-core processor, though the exact model has not been revealed yet. Interestingly enough, the phone packs 3 GB of RAM and has 16 GB of internal storage expandable with a microSD card. The Coolpad Mega comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, albeit customized. Like other phones from Coolpad, the Coolpad Mega runs the CoolUI, a heavily skinned version of the stock Android 6.0 UI. One of the main advertised features of the phone is its camera. For a low-cost phone, the Coolpad Mega surprisingly comes with 8 MP camera on both the front and rear sides of the device, with both the camera having essential features like Autofocus. A decent 2500 mAh battery powers the device.
The Coolpad Mega is scheduled to be available on 24th August 2016 exclusively through Amazon India and is priced at $112 (Rs. 7499). The device will be available in three colors – champagne white, pure gold, and gray. The device widely speculated to be launched at this event was the Coolpad Sky 3, and the Coolpad Mega shares a lot of common attributes with the other phone, including the same display, and design. The camera is also likely to be the same on both of these phones, but the RAM is slightly upgraded to 3 GB in the Coolpad Mega, as the Coolpad Sky 3 only has 2 GB of RAM. The Coolpad Sky 3 is also significantly more expensive at about $180, despite the lower specifications than the Coolpad Mega.
