Google Now has evolved quite a bit over the last four years now. And one of the newer features for Google Now, at least when it comes to content that is shown in there, is giving you news articles that are similar to what you have been reading up on and/or researching. For instance, if you’ve been researching a new smartphone lately, Google Now may recommend some articles on the new Galaxy Note 7 or even the upcoming Nexus devices. However, these articles that appear in Google Now haven’t had any settings for the user to adjust. So if the user wanted to stay up-to-date on politics, that wasn’t possible, until now.
According to a tip that was received by Android Police, it looks like a few users are gaining a new feature on Google Now that allows them to pick their interests. It’s called “Explore Interests” and you can choose up to 6 interests to add into your Google Now feed. These can be as vague as sports, politics or news. Google will also show you what is popular among these categories, in your area. Always a good feature, especially if you are looking for a way to keep up with your local sports teams. This is going to allow you to keep up with just about anything and everything in Google Now, without even needing to search for it, or use another app – like the many, many news reader apps that are out there already.
Of course, this feature is only available on a handful of devices right now. Which typically means that Google is indeed testing the waters here with this feature. To see if users like the change, and/or if its something that might be useful to their users. Often times, changes like this appear for some users, but not everyone. And they don’t always turn into a real feature. Making it tough to say whether this will be coming to Google Now in the near future, or not. But if Google is looking to bring you search results in Google Now before you search for them, this is going to be a big way to do just that.
