Last August, Google announced its OnHub router, one which they marketed as easy to use and designed to be placed in the center of your home. To celebrate one year since its launch, Google has announced a new partnership with Philips Lighting and, as part of the partnership, Google’s OnHub now features a new integration in the form of support for Philips’ Hue series of lights. Thanks to the new update, anybody who owns an OnHub router can now type in “On.Here” on any smartphone, tablet or computer browser that’s connected to the router and control their Hue lights without needing to enter or download the Philips Hue app.
In case you are wondering what’s so special about the OnHub router, other than its new integration, the router comes with a number of interesting features. One of them being the ability to pinpoint what is slowing your Wi-Fi down, be it your internet service provider or your router itself, as well as switching the connected devices to the quickest Wi-Fi band automatically. On another note, the router also receives constant security updates from Google’s cloud, meaning all of your data and devices are constantly protected. As well as this, if you have the ASUS-manufactured OnHub router, you can also wave your hand over the top in order to boost the Wi-Fi speed for a certain device.
Although, not all its features are technical. The router comes with a number of quirky extras such as the ability to name your devices and the Wi-Fi network itself, and the possibility of purchasing custom shells for your router, in order to help the router better blend in with its surroundings.
Back to the birthday celebrations, though, and the new partnership is not the only thing Google has up its sleeve. To further celebrate one year of the router, Google is offering a $20 discount on any TP-link OnHub router that’s purchased between now and September 30.
