One of the great features of the new Lenovo Moto Z series of phones is their ability to use Moto Mods. What makes Moto Mods a better solution to expanding the capabilities of a smartphone (compared to the LG modular approach for instance), is that the Moto Mods do not invade the body of the device – it simply ‘snaps’ on the back of the Moto Z with a connector pin assembly and magnets. It also helps to have the camera module stick out so far on the back as it acts as a stabilizer in holding the module in place.
The Moto Mods that are now available include a JBL SoundBoost speaker (for those that do not want to carry around a separate Bluetooth speaker), an Insta-Share Projector that will turn your Moto Z into a projector, and a 2,200 mah battery with one model even offering wireless charging. However, the Moto Mod many are waiting to arrive is the new camera module being built by Hasselblad.
This new camera Moto Mod is expected to add some real photography muscle to the Moto Z. TechDroider managed to get their hands on some drawings that show just how the new camera Mod will function. The new camera Mod will offer up to 10x Optical Zoom capabilities with a xenon flash. It will have its own on/off button (the smaller yellow button) to turn the camera and zoom on or to turn everything off. The larger yellow button is the physical shutter button you will press to take a picture. Outside the shutter button, there will be a rotatable ring that will allow you to Zoom-in or Zoom-out with the camera lens.
The Hasselblad’s camera Mod could be the perfect way to use your smartphone for all of your picture taking. Its acceptance will be based on if whether or not it truly does adds to the photo capabilities of the Moto Z and of course, how much it will cost – which appears at the moment to be a price that is probably pushing the $300 figure. While that does seem a lot to spend on an additional component, Lenovo has stated that the Moto Mods will be compatible with the next-generation Moto Z device(s).
