Having struggled to compete with Chinese and Taiwanese smartphone vendors at the mid and entry-level segments of the smartphone market, Sony recently decided to concentrate exclusively on the premium segment. The company also killed off its Xperia ‘Z’ line and in its place, introduced three Xperia ‘X’ devices earlier this year. Now, an all-new Xperia handset seems to have been certified by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) according to a listing on the regulator’s official website. The device is currently listed as the Sony 14784Z, and is also known as the Sony Kugo, which is apparently the device’s codename within Sony Mobile. The FCC listing doesn’t give us a whole lot of information in terms of hardware specifications, but for the fact that it will come with a 2,700 mAh battery.
So while we’re still in the dark about the hardware specs of the upcoming Sony smartphone, what we do know is that Sony is expected to launch a premium smartphone fairly soon. The device is currently known as the Xperia F8331, and is a different model from the once that has now cleared the FCC. It was listed on benchmarking site GFXbench last month, revealing that it will feature a 1080p display panel, have a USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing and support 4K video recording on both its cameras. Beyond that, it’s still a bit of a mystery, but we expect to get more info about the device in the days to come.
Sony Kugo, the device that has now gone through the FCC, had earlier passed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certifications, and from what we’ve heard, is rumored to come with a 5.2-inch display panel, 4GB of RAM and an NFC chip that will enable users to make purchases via mobile payment platforms like Android Pay. The device also promises to be a fairly powerful one, with early rumors indicating that it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. Beyond that, it’s still a bit of a mystery, but things should hopefully start clearing up going forward. Sony has a media event scheduled for September 1 at the IFA trade show in Berlin, and sections of the media expect the company to unveil its latest offerings there.
