The Pebble 2 smartwatch has just passed through the FCC this week, perhaps making it more of a reality that the device is reaching the point of its official launch, which is scheduled to be in September. Initially, Pebble had teased an event earlier this year that was set for May 24th, hinting that they would be sharing some rather big news. Speculation ran high that it could be a new watch, and when that date came around that’s exactly what Pebble had to reveal as they launched a brand new Kickstarter for the Pebble 2. The watch was not alone, however, as the Kickstarter included the Pebble Time 2 and the Pebble Core.
While the details of the Pebble 2 have already been made public as Pebble discussed them in the Kickstarter, what they haven’t mentioned at this point in time is an exact release date for the watch. This of course, does not include the estimated time of shipment which as mentioned above, is supposed to be next month. Devices showing up at the FCC usually means that a launch of the device is just around the corner, so it’s entirely possible that the launch of the Pebble 2 could be within the first couple of weeks of September as opposed to the end of the month. Having said that, the watch passing through the FCC and getting a certification is not a confirmation on the release date being nearby.
If you missed details on the Pebble 2 during its kickstarter and up until now, to recap, the Pebble 2 comes with a similar display in that it uses the same black and white color for the display to make it more visible when viewing in direct sunlight. Pebble has reinforced its durability, though, as the screen is now made of Gorilla Glass which should make preventing scratches and scuffs quite a bit easier than on the previous model. Pebble has also included a heart rate monitor in the watch this time around, meaning that users will have the ability to track their heart rate during exercise, making the Pebble 2 a more fitness-friendly watch than the original. The Pebble 2 also features a similar looking silicone band and face housing when compared to the Pebble, so those who are looking to upgrade from the original should feel a familiarity with the second model.
