Sony killed off its ‘Xperia Z’ line with the Xperia Z5 range that was announced at the IFA trade show in Germany last year, opting instead to adopt the ‘Xperia X’ moniker for its flagship smartphone lineup in 2016. The company has already announced a number of handsets as part of its new series, namely, the Xperia X, Xperia XA, Xperia XA Ultra and Xperia X Performance, all of which were announced back in February this year. If reports are to be believed, the Japanese consumer electronics giant is now looking to add to that growing list with the launch of at least a couple of new devices at this year’s edition of the IFA in Berlin on September 1.
While the first of the two handsets is expected to be called the ‘Xperia X Compact’, there’s some amount of confusion regarding the name of the second one, with reports claiming that it can be marketed as either ‘Xperia XZ’ or ‘Xperia XR’. It remains to be seen which one turns out to be the final choice for Sony, but thanks to a steady stream of leaks and rumors, we now know a few of the details regarding both the upcoming handsets from the Japanese tech giant. While press renders of the Xperia X Compact were recently leaked by tech journalist and tipster extraordinaire, Mr. Evan Blass (@evleaks), a report apparently originating in the Dutch tech media has now seemingly revealed the tech specs of both the handsets.
According to reports, the Xperia XR (or XZ) will ship with a 5.2-inch display panel and have a Snapdragon 820 under the hood along with 4GB of RAM. Imaging options will include a 23-megapixel primary camera with a dual-LED flash and laser auto-focus, alongside a 13-megapixel front-facing shooter. As for the Xperia X Compact, it will feature a 4.6-inch screen and carry a 2,700mAh battery. It, too, will be powered by the Snapdragon 820, but there’s not a whole lot more known about the device at the moment. Both devices, meanwhile, are expected to come with USB-C connectivity. Many of the key details about the two upcoming Sony handsets are still unknown, so it will be interesting to see if we get a bit more info about them in the few days leading up to the event in Berlin.
