If you’ve been considering picking up Samsung’s Gear IconX cord-free earbuds, they’re now officially available through Amazon in the U.S. for $199 and in all three colors which includes Black, White, and Blue. Samsung announced the Gear IconX earbuds earlier this year alongside the official announcement for the Gear Fit2, their second-generation Gear-branded fitness tracker. The Gear IconX launched in the U.S. earlier this month on August 19th, having been pushed back from the original planned launch date of August 15th. This was a coordinated move that Samsung decided would be better for the device to coincide with the global (which included the U.S.) launch of the Galaxy Note 7 which hit store shelves on the same day.
Since the Gear Icon X officially launched over a week ago, the earbuds have been available to order in the U.S. directly from Samsung, as well as Best Buy’s website, and they could also be picked up locally at Best Buy retail stores as well as the major U.S. wireless carriers like T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T. While it was expected that Amazon would be selling the earbuds at some point in the near future, at the time they had not been available for purchase, leaving consumers to wait. That has changed as of today, though, and anyone who has been on the fence about buying these or were simply waiting for the Amazon availability now have the opportunity to pick them up through the massive online merchant.
The Gear IconX are first and foremost wireless earbuds for listening to music, but they’re also fitness trackers thanks to the embedded sensors and will allow users to track their workouts. The sensors will recognize when you put them in your ear so they automatically turn on and periodically throughout your workout they’ll read off your workout details in whichever earbud you designate as the “controller.” Just as there is no power button to turn these on, there are also no buttons for managing playback, as all of that is handled through the touch sensors on the earbuds. They can stream music from your favorite apps or from your device’s local storage, and will last about 1.6 hours, or you can store music on the Gear IconX locally via the 4GB of internal memory which will extend the battery life to about 3.8 hours. Battery life will of course vary by user depending on how much you interact with them while they’re in use, and if you need more time you can always toss them in the included case which not only stores them but also charges them up.
