While a significant number of Android device owners seem to be preoccupied with catching Pokémon at the moment, it is not the only fun thing you can do with your smartphone. In fact, Google has today launched a new interactive game called Verne: The Himalayas. While this one does not particularly take the same approach as Pokémon GO, what this one does do is draw on the copious amounts of 3D imagery available through Google Maps as the backdrop for the game.
In terms of the app, you take the form of Verne, who is a yeti and the general idea is that you can check out the Himalayas in closer detail by navigating your way around the Himalayas and all thanks to the help of the 3D mapping data provided by Google Maps. Interestingly, in spite of Verne adopting a rather cute persona, the Google Maps blog announcing the launch of the game does detail that Verne is actually 500 ft tall. It seems Verne just pales in size when compared to the surrounding scenery including the likes of Mt. Everest
Of course, checking out new and exotic places is nothing new with Google Maps. Although, it seems the idea behind this particular ‘experiment’ (as Google calls it) is to find a new way for the younger generations to engage with that same Maps content in a more fun way. Hence the game and it’s arguably cute leading yeti. The game itself is now available to download via the Google Play Store and is a free download. While this is a game designed with youth integration in mind, it is likely to be one which appeals to a number of users due to the advanced attributes of the game. Not to mention, you can even ride around wearing a jetpack. Those interested in finding out more about Verne: The Himalayas or downloading a copy, can do so by heading through the link below. Although it is worth pointing out that due to the nature of the game, it is a fairly sizable download which comes in at 211 MB. Alternatively, you can check out the official video teaser of the game released by Google Maps below.
