The LG V20, successor to last year’s V10, was finally revealed yesterday, and impressed fans with an attractive design, high-end specs, and as expected, a small secondary screen, the signature feature of the V10. The V20 looks like a great all around device, but just how durable is it? This drop test video runs it through a series of increasingly tough drops to show exactly how much damage LG’s new flagship can take.
The first drop was onto the V20’s back, which as expected, is no problem for the durable device. It comes through the test with barely any noticeable physical damage. The battery cover and battery do separate from the body, something common among devices with removable batteries, but this does not cause any long-term damage, as the device can easily be put back together. As the video notes, breaking apart seems to absorb some impact from the fall, as it expels energy away from the rest of the device. Next up is a side test, which is exactly what it sounds like, a drop directly onto one of the sides of the device. Again, the back cover and battery separate from the body, but it stands up very well. There is a scuff on one of the bottom corners, where it seems to have taken the hardest hit, and a few scratches on the battery, but no major visible damage. Moving on, the next test aims to find out how well the V20 can stand up to being dropped directly on its face. Impressively, once again, it comes away with almost no noticeable damage. Finally, the tester brings in his taller associate to try a few more face tests from a much higher distance. Even at a height of what looks to easily be eight feet, the V20 survives the first two rounds, but on round three, it finally reaches its limit, with the screen fully shattering from edge to edge. Although the device does still seem to be somewhat functional, it is likely that at this point it has internal damage as well as external.
LG unveiled the V20 yesterday, September 6, via a live-streamed event. The device packs a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display with a 2.1-inch secondary display at the top, 4 GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 64 GB of internal storage, and a 16 MP camera with OIS.
