Google has just started to push a fairly big update to its Fiber TV service today, which gives it a makeover complete with a refreshed look as well as some new and improved features that Fiber customers will surely grow to love. While Fiber TV is still continuing to expand out to new locations around the U.S., Google is intent on improving it any way that they can for those who are already subscribers or are considering subscribing if they live in a supported area.
The new update, which Google states is rolling out to existing customers over the course of the next few weeks while new Fiber TV subscribers will get access as soon as their setup is installed, adds features recommendations, which are personalized to each and every user and will attempt to recommend TV shows or movies that may be of interest to the viewer. Recommendations are nothing new, as services like Netflix and Hulu already offer such things, but they are new to Fiber TV and should make the viewing experience more enjoyable. Naturally, recommendations are based on content that the subscriber already watches, so they won’t be receiving recommendations for content that is too different from things they already enjoy.
In addition to the introduction of personalized recommendations, Google states that they have also improved the smart search feature allowing you to search by keywords, the names of actors or sports teams, and the titles of shows or movies. Fiber TV’s new and improved features are also joined by a new look for the interface which Google states is designed to make discovering new content as well as old content that the user is already familiar with more simple. This new interface also includes a reorganization of the DVR functionality so it’s easier to maneuver through recordings in the list, and users will now find ratings information Rotten Tomatoes attached to content so they can see what others think of what they’re considering watching, which, could be very useful if it’s something new and you want others’ opinions before investing time into a program. While all of these changes are included with this update that’s starting to go out as of today, Google also mentions that they have more stuff to introduce to the service in the future.
