Plex Teams Up With Amazon To Introduce Plex Cloud

When it comes to consuming media content of any sort, there are few better options than Plex. As well as being a media player, Plex offers a way for its customers to consume their stored media across devices and across platforms. Especially when there is a Plex Media Server in play, as this essentially acts as the hub to provide customers with instant access to all of its connected devices anywhere, at anytime. Although, it now seems as though Plex has taken that notion even further as they now offer a way to consume that same media without the need for a Plex Media Server at all.

Plex has today announced that they have teamed up with Amazon (specifically Amazon Drive) to offer its customers a way to access content without the need to have a Plex Media Server device running, this is ‘Plex Cloud’. With Plex Cloud there is no longer a need to have to purchase any specific hardware that is able to act as a Media Server or worry about having to maintain that device or even the server. Instead, Plex Cloud offers a simple to set up service and one which is synced with your Amazon Drive account to offer access of stored content to all your usual Plex-related devices.

Of course, this does mean that you will need to have an Amazon Drive account to make use of the service. It is also worth pointing out that the Plex Cloud service is also only available to those who are on a paid Plex tier service like Plex Pass. Although, that is generally the case for remote access to own content through the Plex Media Server anyway. So in reality, the only prerequisite is that you do have a subscription to Amazon Drive. Which is likely to be of specific interest to those who do not have the hardware capable of running a Plex Media Server or an NVIDIA SHIELD (which also recently gained support to act as a Plex Media Server) but would like to finally make use of some of the more beneficial Plex services.
