Contrary to previous rumors, the next flagship smartphone from LG Electronics apparently won’t come with a curved OLED display. According to reports coming out of South Korea earlier today, the LG G6 will also come without an important design element – the full-metal body with glass cover. While the idea of putting a curved OLED display in the LG G6 has been done away with because of supply constraints, plans for the metal body and glass cover are being scrapped to save costs. The company was also looking at ways to incorporate a new fast-charging tech with its upcoming flagship, but those ideas reportedly had to be put to the back-burner because the technology is not yet ready for primetime.
While LG Electronics is yet to make any official comment on this issue, the report from Chosun Biz claims that the company decided to backtrack from its original decision to use a curved OLED panel on the G6, after fellow LG group company, LG Display, admitted its inability to produce enough OLED panels to meet demand. LG Display currently supplies OLED panels to Apple and LG Electronics for use on their respective smartwatch lineups, but will apparently be unable to scale up its production in time for the LG G6. The company, meanwhile, has also bagged the contract to supply OLED displays for the next-generation iPhones that will be launched late next year.
With its plans of using curved OLED panels on its next-gen flagship handsets now ruined, the South Korean consumer electronics giant is expected to go back to using a standard LCD panel on the LG G6, just like it has done on its other handsets, including the LG G5. It isn’t immediately known when the company will finally introduce curved OLED panels on its flagship smartphones to compete with compatriot Samsung, but if the latest report is anything to go by, it certainly isn’t going to be any time soon. The company, meanwhile, has recently launched the LG V20 as a follow-up to the highly-successful LG V10. It remains to be seen if the new device can replicate the success of its predecessor, which turned out to be one of the more well-received smartphones launched by LG in recent years.
