According to reports coming out of the Netherlands earlier today, two of Samsung’s flagship smartphones from last year are receiving their September security updates as part of the monthly ‘Security Maintenance Release (SMR)‘ that Samsung rolls out to its premium smartphones. Unlocked versions of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are apparently the recipients of the latest security update that’s being rolled out by Samsung as we speak. The incoming update is being rolled out Over-The-Air and weighs in at 142.30MB. As always, it is expected to be rolled out in phases, so those who’re yet to receive the notification can manually check by going over to ‘Settings’ and tapping on ‘About Device’.
Samsung Electronics recently revealed that this month’s security update actually includes 66 patches from Google in addition to the 9 vulnerabilities that the company says it has patched up on its own. One of these nine reportedly fixes a security issue that affected the SystemUI. The vulnerability, first reported back in June this year, is the result of a null pointer dereference on fimg2d driver. A whole host of other issues are also expected to be patched up by the latest update, which is also expected to bring some stability improvements as well as some bug fixes, as per the official changelog; the Dutch version of which can be seen in the image below.
The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in Europe had already received their respective September security patches earlier this month, as have a number of other Samsung flagships, including the Galaxy Note 5. So it was probably only a matter of time before the 2015 flagships got the security patches rolled out to them as well. As mentioned already, the new software is expected to be rolled out in phases, so in case you’re using either of the two devices, you are expected to get the update notification fairly soon, if you haven’t already. You should also be able to manually check for the availability of the new software by going over to the ‘Settings’ menu on your phone, before scrolling down to select the ‘About Device’ option and tapping on the ‘Download Updates Manually’ button.
