T-Mobile Increasing Selected Customers' Data Allowances

T-Mobile US is upgrading selected “loyal customers” to a higher data allowance on their accounts. Customers are being notified of this via an SMS message containing a link to a T-Mobile web page. These messages started being sent yesterday, Wednesday 7 September, will continue today and will end at some point tomorrow, Friday 9 September. T-Mobile have not explained why selected customers are getting these upgrades but adds that customers can call 611 or mention @TMobileHelp on Twitter for support. It is not clear the proportion of customers eligible for this special offer. These bonus tariffs will run until the 28 February 2019, when customers will revert back to their original tariffs. Still, this is over two years of additional data from America’s Uncarrier at no extra cost.

As for the details of the tariff upgrades, here the data allowance upgrades vary. Customers currently on the 2.5 GB and 5 GB high speed data allowance a month benefit from another 1 GB, bringing their totals up to 3.5 GB and 6 GB, respectively. Those customers using a 10 GB plan are being upgraded to the unlimited data plan and the new data allowances are available for on-device and Mobile Hotspot use. However, upgrading customers do lose their Data Stash, although one would hope that if a customer has built up a substantial data stash in the time to date, he or she likely won’t need the additional data especially with the larger regular allowance. However, this is something to bear in mind if you have been building up outstanding data allowance with a plan for it and you may want to contact T-Mobile US.

This is only one in a number of T-Mobile US’ changes to plans in 2016, although this one is a longer term temporary change. The other permanent change is the introduction of one plan, the T-Mobile ONE, which gives customers a quoted unlimited data allowance even though it is throttled after around 27 GB of use in a single month. T-Mobile US has also been working hard to improve its 4G LTE network, although in recent quality surveys it is still ranked fourth in the nation. The company has recently told customers that it is offering a more advanced mobile data network than the competition and Chief Executive, John Legere, is not frightened of trolling the other carriers, especially on Twitter.
