Video: Samsung Share The Gear S3 Design Story

The Samsung Gear S3 series was introduced at IFA 2016 in Berlin, and needless to say the company’s new smartwatch has been stealing the spotlight ever since. The new series has been refined inside and out, and in fact, according to a new official blog post exploring the Design Story of “a true smartwatch”, “refined” seems to have been an important keyword for Samsung throughout the entire design process of the Gear S3 series.

Samsung recently published a new story exploring the design process behind the Samsung Gear S3 frontier and Gear S3 classic, and according to the South Korean tech giant, it has “perfected a wearable device that exceeds the limitations of analogue with innovative digital technology”, all the while paying homage to “craftsmen who breathed life into timepieces of old”. In other words, Samsung strived to create a classic timepiece that could catch the attention of conventional watch enthusiasts and smartwatch fans alike. To this end, the Samsung Gear S3 comes in two different flavors, namely the Gear S3 Frontier said to be equally elegant as it is rugged, and the Gear S3 Classic, which is described by Samsung as a timepiece aimed at “stylish 20-30 somethings who value function and practicality”. But to achieve the end product, Samsung reveals that it went through an “exhaustive study of timepieces” while surveying watch users in order to determine the perfect size and form factor that defines a watch. The company further upped the game by using stainless steel 316L for creating the watch’s exterior, which is the same building material commonly used by renowned watch makers for crafting conventional timepieces.

Aside from the beautiful exterior, Samsung also touched on the operating system driving the timepiece, and added that the watch face of the Samsung Gear S3 “has been carefully set in place” and that the “near microscopic details of a watch piece have been painstakingly recreated digitally”, all the while enriching the Gear S3 with functions that can only be obtained from the digital world, such as weather updates and heart rate monitoring. And to showcase this content to the wearer, the new Samsung Gear S3 features improved Always On Display technology boasting “a newly structured low energy setting” that allows for the watch face to be always displayed “with more vibrant colors and detail”. All-in-all, the Samsung Gear S3 is one of the most exciting smartwatches money can buy at this point in time, and if you’re interested in knowing a bit more about the manufacturing process leading to the creation of the timepiece as is, you can check out the official “Design Story” video below.
