After months of various rumors and leaks, Xiaomi has finally announced their new flagship handsets. The company has announced the Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus handsets during their press event in China. We’ve already talked about these two devices in our official announcement article and are here to take a closer look at their specifications. These two devices are both made out of metal, but they do differ quite a bit as far as the design is concerned, while their specifications are not identical either, read on.
Let’s start with the Xiaomi Mi 5s, shall we. The Xiaomi Mi 5s features a 5.15-inch fullHD (1920 x 1080) display which can get quite brights (600 nits), and it has a 94.4% NTSC color gamut, with a 1500:1 contrast ratio. This handset is fueled by the Snapdragon 821 64-bit quad-core processor running at 2.15GHz, while the Adreno 530 GPU is also included in this package. The Xiaomi Mi 5s ships with 3GB / 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 64GB / 128GB of internal storage (UFS 2.0). The 12-megapixel camera (f/2.0 aperture, Sony’s IMX378 lens, 1/2.3-inch sensor, PDAF) is placed on the back of this smartphone, while you’ll be able to find a 4-megapixel snapper (2um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture, 80-degree wide-angle lens) up front. Android 6.0 Marshmallow comes pre-installed on this smartphone with the company’s MIUI 8 OS on top of it, while you do get two SIM card slots here (2 x nano SIM). The phone is equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, unlike some other devices out there. The Type-C USB port is placed on the bottom of this phone, and you’ll use it to charge the phone’s 3,200mAh battery (Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging is supported). This device measures 145.6 x 70.3 x 8.25mm, while it weighs 145 grams.
The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, on the other hand, sports a 5.7-inch fullHD (1920 x 1080) display, which is also quite bright (550 nits max), while it comes with a 94% NTSC color gamut, and a 1300:1 contrast ratio. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 64-bit quad-core SoC fuels this handset as well, but it is clocked at 2.35GHz in this device. The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus comes with 4GB / 6GB of RAM and 64GB / 128GB of native storage (UFS 2.0). Two 13-megapixel snappers (Sony’s sensor, PDAF) are placed on the back of this smartphone, while you’ll find a single 4-megapixel shooter (2um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture, 80-degree wide-angle lens) on the phone’s front side. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the back of this device, and a 3,800mAh battery is also included here, along with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. Android 6.0 Marshmallow comes out of the box with Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 OS. This phablet measures 154.6 x 77.7 x 7.95mm, while it weighs 168 grams.
The Xiaomi Mi 5s comes in Dark Gray, Silver, Gold and Pink Gold color variants, while its larger sibling features Pink, Silver and Gold variants. Two Xiaomi Mi 5s models are priced at 1,999 Yuan ($300) and 2,299 Yuan ($345) in China, while the Mi 5s Plus models cost 2,299 Yuan ($345) and 2,599 Yuan ($390), respectively.
