Samsung is no stranger to the Internet of Things, which is evident with their initial detailing of what the ARTIK Cloud would do, and what their vision for it is. Part of the ARTIK Cloud functionality that some users were no doubt looking forward to was the ability to use the Gear S2 to control and manage various IoT products around the home. Samsung announced that some things would be possible with the Gear S2 in this way back in July, but as of now they have demonstrated what is actually possible and some of the actions are shown off in a video which you can view below.
While the video only showcases just a couple of options, at least that’s all that’s visible on the Gear S2’s display, it’s quite likely that other actions will be available in due time as Samsung expands the ARTIK Cloud and other apps make use of the technology. For now, it looks as if it will at least be possible to control the lights and music that are connected to the ARTIK Cloud from the Gear S2, although with music this isn’t necessarily music playback, but rather the ability to power on and off a speaker or home entertainment system.
As the ARTIK Cloud app connects up with the Samsung SmartThings hub and devices, it shouldn’t be too hard to imagine the kinds of devices that consumers with both a Gear S2 and and ARTIK Cloud enabled home would be able to do. Right off the bat, you should at least be able to toggle the power for any devices that are hooked up to your Samsung SmartThings devices, which have support for quite a few different smart home products, like outlets, speakers, and more. The amount of functions that a user could complete with the Gear S2 could also expand once more products are compatible with ARTIK Cloud, which shouldn’t take long as Samsung has extended the support for the technology to non-Samsung devices. Perhaps more than anything though, is that support for ARTIK Cloud on the Gear S2 seems to indicate that Samsung may be more invested in the IoT space than some people think if they’re eager to make the watch on your wrist have the power to control things around the home.
